Mark Parton MLA has been chosen as the new Leader of the Canberra Liberals, with Deborah Morris MLA appointed as Deputy Leader. This change follows the resignation of previous leader Leanne Castley and deputy leader Jeremy Hanson, who stepped down to give the party a stronger chance at the 2028 election.
Leanne Castley and Jeremy Hanson did not seek re-election for their leadership roles during the party meeting held today. Mark Parton, first elected to the Legislative Assembly in 2016, accepted the leadership position with full support from elected members. Deborah Morris joined the Assembly last year and will serve as Deputy Leader.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Leanne Castley and Jeremy Hanson for their work over the last 12 months,” said Mr. Parton.
Mark Parton emphasized the importance of party cohesion through open dialogue, valuing diverse perspectives, and finding common ground. His focus remains on building an alternative government that effectively serves the ACT.
“Our priority remains clear: continue building an alternative government that delivers for the ACT.”
Following his election, Mr. Parton resigned as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. A new Speaker is expected to be elected in December. Meanwhile, ACT Greens MLA Andrew Braddock will act as Deputy Speaker.
Leanne Castley had assumed leadership of the Liberals after the October 2024 election, succeeding Elizabeth Lee.
Mark Parton and Deborah Morris take leadership roles in the Canberra Liberals aiming to strengthen party unity and prepare for the 2028 election, with key Assembly role changes underway.
