Gérald Caussé, a key figure in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was appointed as the newest apostle on Thursday. At 62, Caussé joins the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, the church’s all-male leadership council just below the president and his two top counselors.
Caussé brings extensive experience managing the church’s finances and played a central role in its global temple building boom. He has overseen many of the church’s temples worldwide, where its most sacred ceremonies occur.
Although the church does not publicly disclose its finances, Ensign Peak Advisors Inc.—its investment arm—reported a portfolio valued at $58 billion. Caussé has sometimes defended the church’s financial secrecy, stating in 2020:
“We really consider those funds as belonging to the Lord.”
A native of France, Caussé’s expertise in financial matters and his leadership experience deeply influence the church’s ongoing policies and business dealings.
Gérald Caussé’s appointment strengthens the LDS Church leadership with his financial expertise and temple-building experience, key factors in the church’s recent growth and governance.
