Japan among countries to target quadrupling sustainable fuel use

Japan and Partners Aim to Quadruple Sustainable Fuel Use by 2035

Japan, alongside several other countries, announced their intention to increase the use of sustainable fuels, including biofuels and low-carbon hydrogen, fourfold by the year 2035.

The joint declaration was released ahead of the 30th Conference of the Parties to the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30), scheduled to take place in Belem, Brazil.

International Collaboration on Climate Goals

The initiative was proposed jointly by Brazil, Japan, and Italy, with the support of 19 additional countries such as Canada, India, Mexico, and the Netherlands.

“The initiative is attracting global support, given that both developed and developing economies, as well as large and small nations, have joined,” said a Brazilian government official.

Expanding Sustainable Fuel Adoption

The participating countries plan to promote sustainable fuels across various sectors, including aviation, shipping, and automotive industries. Each government is encouraged to develop national policies that foster the use of these fuels and align their climate targets with these efforts.

Commitment to Emission Reduction

The declaration urges nations to ensure that policy measures for sustainable energy contribute directly to greenhouse gas reduction goals, reinforcing collective progress toward cleaner global energy systems.

Author's summary: The declaration led by Japan, Brazil, and Italy sets a global target to boost the use of sustainable fuels by 2035, gaining broad international backing ahead of COP30 in Belem, Brazil.
