Gangland figure Tony Mokbel will not return to jail following a significant reduction of his drug trafficking sentence on appeal.
In 2012, Mokbel received a 30-year prison sentence with a 22-year non-parole period for masterminding an extensive drug syndicate across three separate criminal cases. Of the 30 years, 20 were tied to one case.
On Thursday, the sentence was cut to 13 years, seven months, and 15 days, which the court recognized as “time already served” before the appeal. Mokbel acknowledged the justices with a bow and then kissed his girlfriend before leaving without comment.
“He is taken to have served that entire sentence,” said Justice Stephen McLeish.
In the resentencing, the court considered the 2023 quashing of an earlier conviction known as Plutonium, Mokbel’s head injury sustained in prison, and sentenced him as a first-time drug offender.
On October 3, Justices Stephen McLeish, Maree Kennedy, and Stephen Kaye made these unanimous decisions on Mokbel’s appeals.
Mokbel then left the courthouse, crossing Lonsdale Street into his legal team's chambers.
Author’s summary: Tony Mokbel’s lengthy drug trafficking sentence was significantly reduced on appeal, leading to his immediate release after years of incarceration.
