SYDNEY (AP) — New Zealand emphatically reclaimed the Pacific Championships, defeating Samoa 36-14 on Sunday and marking the end of veteran Kieran Foran’s 16-year international career on a high note.
Trailing 14-6 at halftime, New Zealand dominated the second half with five unanswered tries, denying Samoa their first international trophy. The home crowd at Parramatta in Sydney’s west, largely pro-Samoan, left disappointed.
In recent years, Samoa and Tonga had overshadowed New Zealand in the Pacific rugby scene. Sunday’s strong comeback, following earlier tournament victories against both teams, sends a clear message ahead of next year’s World Cup.
“The boys dug so deep — I couldn’t be prouder,” said Kieran Foran. “To finish on a high with this group means everything.”
