Carrie Bickmore, a well-known broadcaster and cancer fundraiser, was honored as the 2026 Australian of the Year for Victoria during a ceremony in Melbourne on November 6. This recognition highlights her outstanding dedication to brain cancer research and advocacy.
Bickmore’s commitment to the fight against brain cancer is deeply personal. Since 2015, she has raised more than $27 million to support research efforts seeking a cure. Her fundraising work led to the creation of The Brain Cancer Centre in 2021, a pioneering research hub that brings together top scientists in the field.
The center has played a key role in advancing brain cancer treatment by supporting numerous Australian research projects and launching innovative clinical trials.
Brain cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among Australians under 40, a fact made all the more poignant by Bickmore’s own loss of her husband, Greg, to the disease in 2010.
Besides Bickmore, other distinguished Victorians were also recognized. Bryan Lipmann AM, an advocate for elderly homeless people, received the title of 2026 Senior Australian of the Year for Victoria.
"Carrie Bickmore's dedication has significantly advanced brain cancer research in Australia, offering hope to many families affected by this devastating disease."
