A former Boundary County jail officer, Bryant Brown, faces an aggravated battery charge after allegedly assaulting an inmate in January 2023. Authorities filed the charges in September of the same year.
A preliminary hearing for Brown, 37, is scheduled for November 17 at the Boundary County Courthouse. Two earlier hearings were postponed for undisclosed reasons. His bond was set at $50,000 and has been posted. Brown has not yet entered a plea.
The case stems from a January 3, 2023, incident involving an inmate arrested by Bonners Ferry Police on a misdemeanor warrant from Kootenai County. The Herald does not identify victims in criminal matters.
According to a probable cause affidavit by Sheriff's Detective Brandon Blackmore, the man was intoxicated, verbally abusive, and uncooperative with jail staff.
After a heated verbal exchange with Brown, the inmate entered his holding cell. Blackmore stated that Brown pushed the man against a glass window, struck him with his fist, and caused his head to hit a brick wall. The inmate tried to grab Brown’s arms to defend himself but otherwise did not resist.
The affidavit further alleges that “Brown then grabbed the man’s throat with both hands and slammed his head into the brick wall.”
Former jail sergeant Bryant Brown is accused of violently assaulting an inmate in 2023; his hearing is set as legal proceedings continue in Boundary County.
