SAINT-BASILE-LE-GRAND — A Roman Catholic diocese on Montreal's South Shore has expressed regret over a tombstone displaying the logo of the Hells Angels outlaw biker gang at a parish cemetery.
The Diocese of St-Jean-Longueuil stated it was scandalized by the tombstone’s presence and acknowledged it should not have been approved initially.
According to the diocese, the local parish in St-Basile-le-Grand, Quebec, where the cemetery is located, holds the authority to remove any items that conflict with Roman Catholic beliefs.
The diocese confirmed it will support the parish in efforts to remove the tombstone.
The tombstone has attracted attention from both media outlets and local visitors after Montreal news outlet La Presse first reported on the issue.
The parish has declined to comment on the matter.
