First responders were dispatched and two buildings were evacuated at Joint Base Andrews, the Air Force One base in Maryland, after a suspicious package containing white powder was opened.
A spokesperson for the base stated,
“A building and connecting building were evacuated, and a cordon was established around the area.”
They added,
“Joint Base Andrews first responders were dispatched to the scene, determined there were no immediate threats, and have turned the scene over to Office of Special Investigations. An investigation is currently ongoing.”
CNN reported, citing two sources familiar with the investigation, that several people were taken to the on-base Malcolm Grow Medical Center after the package was opened, though the base has not confirmed this.
The package contained white powder, but an initial HAZMAT field test found no hazardous substances, according to CNN.
Newsweek has reached out to Joint Base Andrews for comment outside of regular office hours.
