SAO PAULO, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) — Vitor Roque scored twice in the second half as Palmeiras secured a 2-0 victory over Santos at Allianz Parque, extending their lead atop Brazil's Serie A.
Roque opened the scoring in the 67th minute, receiving a pass from Juan Manuel Lopez, then rounding goalkeeper Gabriel Brazao to calmly finish into an empty net. The former Barcelona forward sealed the win with a second goal 10 minutes before full time, lifting a shot over Brazao following a through ball from Rafael Veiga.
The win puts Palmeiras on 68 points, three points clear of second-place Flamengo, with both teams having seven matches remaining.
"In the first half we weren't able to translate our dominance into goals," Palmeiras manager Abel Ferreira said. "But that changed after halftime. With the changes that we made, we had great energy and looked to score at every opportunity. It's a deserved victory."
Palmeiras' strong performance solidifies their position as serious contenders for the Serie A title this season.
