Hundreds of police officers have been deployed across one of Britain’s largest cities amid rising fears of violent clashes between football supporters and protesters. Minor confrontations were reported between Aston Villa fans and pro-Palestinian demonstrators ahead of the Europa League match with Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv.
Authorities confirmed that six individuals were arrested near the stadium. Among them, a 21-year-old man was detained for refusing to remove a face covering when instructed, and a 17-year-old boy was taken into custody for not complying with a dispersal order.
Footage from the scene captured moments when local fans scuffled with police as they approached the stadium gates. Law enforcement responded by reinforcing patrols and closely monitoring crowd movements.
West Midlands Police deployed approximately 700 officers after designating the Aston Villa vs. Maccabi Tel Aviv match as a “high-risk” event.
“The ban on away supporters was based on current intelligence and a thorough assessment of likely protest activity,”
officials explained following the controversial decision to exclude visiting fans from attending the game. This move followed security evaluations addressing potential clashes between opposing protest groups in the same city district.
Five separate demonstrations were organised near Villa Park. Both pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli groups gathered within close proximity, alongside approximately 42,000 home fans. Police officers maintained visible control to prevent escalation as crowds converged ahead of kickoff.
By the second half, the game at Villa Park resumed with Aston Villa maintaining efforts to keep possession. No substitutions were made at halftime.
