Graham “Richo” Richardson, former Labor senator, cabinet minister, and influential powerbroker, passed away at the age of 76 after battling long-term health challenges.
Richardson served as a minister in the Hawke and Keating governments and represented New South Wales in the Senate throughout his political career. After leaving parliament, he became a prominent political commentator and a familiar voice on Sky News Australia.
According to reports, Richardson had vowed to hold on until his son D’Arcy completed his HSC exams. His son finished his final exam on Thursday, and Richardson passed away early Saturday morning.
“When he had his big health challenge, he said to his wife Amanda, ‘I’m going to live till I see D’Arcy finish exams and his HSC’,” said broadcaster Ben Fordham. “D’Arcy did his last exam on Thursday, which was his French exam. And Richo died this morning.”
Richardson had faced recurring illness, including pneumonia and influenza, and had been receiving dialysis treatment. He is survived by his wife Amanda, their son D’Arcy, and two children from his first marriage.
“I’ve lost the love of my life. D’Arcy’s lost the greatest dad and Australia’s lost one of its best. He was a man ahead of his time,” said his wife Amanda in a statement.
Graham Richardson’s passing marks the end of a major influence in Australian politics, remembered for his resilience, insight, and dedication to his family and country.
