Luka Doncic delivered a stellar performance with 35 points and 13 assists, narrowly missing a triple-double, as the Los Angeles Lakers rallied past the San Antonio Spurs 118-116. The game at Crypto.com Arena was intense, marked by 66 fouls and 84 free throws.
Before the game, nearly all questions to Lakers personnel, including Coach JJ Redick and center Deandre Ayton, centered on Spurs star Victor Wembanyama. The 7-foot-4 French player, who may be taller, is regarded as unique in the league for his ability to disrupt opponents' offensive and defensive strategies.
“He bends opponents’ principles – offensively and defensively,” said Redick.
Despite the challenge posed by Wembanyama, the Lakers delivered a strong defensive effort and that, combined with Doncic’s high scoring and playmaking, helped secure their win. The team closed the game on a 21-10 run and overcame a late mistake to maintain their lead.
“Our group is so connected right now, we were able to get back together and there was no quitting,” Redick commented. “It’s a connected group.”
After missing the previous game against Portland, Doncic returned to the lineup adding nine rebounds, five steals, and two blocks in addition to his scoring and assists. Despite a shooting performance of 9 for 27 from the field, his critical plays ensured the Lakers’ fifth straight victory, improving their record to 7-2 before heading on a five-game road trip.
“For him and for the group, the word of the day is like resiliency,” Redick said.
The Lakers showcased determination and teamwork, with Luka Doncic's versatile impact pivotal in overcoming the Spurs and securing a fifth consecutive win.
