Shutdown Day 35: Hopeful Talk, But Still No Deal

The U.S. government shutdown has become the longest on record, surpassing the 35-day mark.

The Senate failed to pass a short-term spending bill to reopen the government for the 14th time.

"I think there are people who realize this has gone on long enough, and there's been enough pain inflicted on the American people and it's time to end it,"

said Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.). He expressed hope that bipartisan negotiators were "close" to reaching a deal.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) also acknowledged the need for a resolution.
