Artist Bianca Broxton Honors Enslaved Woman Belinda Sutton

Artist Bianca Broxton returned to Medford to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution by remembering Belinda Sutton, an enslaved woman.

In a dimly lit room, Broxton performed for a group of guests from the Medford area, dressed in a floor-length gown and a white veil covering her face, symbolizing the lost records of enslaved people.

The names of women and girls who were enslaved in Medford were recited on a looping tape: "Kate, Mira, Nan, Nancy, Nancy, Nanny, Negro Girl, Negro Woman, Phebe, Present, Prine, Priscilla …"

The repetition of the names had a hypnotic effect, inducing a meditative state.

Author's summary: Bianca Broxton honors Belinda Sutton.
