Millions of people take melatonin as a nightly sleep aid, but new research suggests it may have a surprising link to heart failure.
A study of over 130,000 adults with insomnia found that long-term melatonin use (a year or more) is associated with a nearly doubled risk of developing heart failure, more than triple the risk of hospitalization for heart failure, and nearly twice the risk of death over five years.
Marketed as nature’s sleep switch, melatonin has become a nightly habit for millions.
These findings were presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2025, highlighting a potential concern for those who take melatonin regularly.
