A Galway councillor has suggested that a new acute psychiatric unit planned for Roscommon would be better located in Ballinasloe.
The planned 40-bed inpatient unit is set to replace the existing facility at Roscommon University Hospital. However, Councillor Donagh Killilea questioned the decision to build the unit on the Roscommon campus, citing the lack of a full-time A&E department on site.
The decision contradicts HSE policy, especially when there is a fully functioning 24-hour A&E department attached to Portiuncula University Hospital.
Councillor Killilea also highlighted staff retention issues at Roscommon services and suggested that Ballinasloe, with its proximity to the M6, would be a more suitable location for shared services.
