The New Zealand Government has invested $8 million in the LIC "Methane Barn" to help dairy farmers select lower-emitting genetics.
Agriculture Minister Todd McClay announced the investment at the opening of a new methane research facility in the Waikato, stating that the research will enable farmers to select lower-emitting genetics without harming productivity.
"The research will enable farmers to select lower-emitting genetics and will be a valuable tool to help reduce biogenic methane without harming productivity,"
McClay says the research bolsters confidence in the pipeline of new mitigation tools, giving farmers choices in reducing emissions.
"We are committed to meeting our climate obligations without closing down farms and sending jobs and production overseas,"
The investment aims to help dairy farmers reduce dairy emissions while maintaining productivity.
