A call has been made by the Meath Council of Trade Unions for a new sculpture to honour Navan's miners, to be located near the Andy Connolly Roundabout.
The existing sculpture, 'On the Great Wide Open', pays tribute to those who dedicated their lives to the mining industry in Navan.
The current monument is a “bug bearer for the miners that... does not reflect the image of a current day miner” - John Regan, chairman of Meath Council of Trade Unions.
The sculpture was previously located on the Kells Road and is currently in storage, awaiting relocation.
