Many remember Gurney Norman, an Appalachian writer and mentor, for his legacy in the mountains.
According to Mindy Miller, director of development and communications at the Housing Development Alliance,
Gurney Norman, I think that he’s just one of the most significant figures to come out of his Eastern Kentucky. Miller describes Norman as
somebody who stood tall and was a great voice for this area.
Norman used his writing to give voice to mountain people and taught the younger generation the importance of sharing their stories. Miller, who aspired to be a writer, considers Norman one of her heroes. She recalls a phone conversation with Norman, saying
He was actually willing to speak to me on the phone. And that made me feel important, that made me feel seen.
