A registered sex offender who was mistakenly released from HMP Wandsworth has been arrested after a member of the public reported seeing him.
Brahim Kaddour Cherif, aged 24, was wrongly allowed to leave the south London prison, prompting an extensive manhunt by police. The Metropolitan Police were notified of the error on Tuesday and launched an immediate search operation.
Cherif, an Algerian national, had been convicted in November 2024 for indecent exposure linked to an incident in March of the same year. He received an 18-month community order and was placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for five years.
Authorities said Cherif was believed to have connections to Tower Hamlets and was also known to frequent Westminster.
“At 11:23 a.m. on Friday, 7 November, a call was received from a member of the public reporting a sighting of a man they believed to be Brahim Kaddour-Cherif in the vicinity of Capital City College on Blackstock Road in Islington,” said a Metropolitan Police spokesperson.
“Officers responded immediately and at 11:30 a.m. detained a man matching Cherif's description. His identity was confirmed and he was arrested for being unlawfully at large. He was also arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker in a separate earlier incident. He has been taken into police custody. The Prison Service has been informed.”
