Following the release of her new album Lux, Spanish pop artist Rosalía shared details about meeting her longtime musical idol, Patti Smith. The meeting took place at the legendary Electric Lady Studios in New York and became a cherished memory for the singer.
Rosalía explained during an interview on BBC 6 Music that the meeting came about thanks to Lee Foster, who manages Electric Lady Studios. Speaking with host Nick Grimshaw, she said:
“So we met because he wanted us to meet.”
She vividly remembered the moment:
“I remember walking down the stairs in a white dress, thinking, ‘Oh my God, I don’t want to make Patti Smith wait!’ And then I arrived—she had so much light in her face, in her eyes, in her smile. She pointed at the dress and said, ‘I love your dress.’ Then we talked about the song and started sharing—it was one of the most beautiful things ever to meet her, because I really admire her.”
Rosalía’s album Lux features the track La Yagular, which includes an archival recording of Patti Smith from 1976. In that excerpt, Smith reflects on creativity and persistence:
“Break on through to the other side. Going through one door isn’t enough, a million doors aren’t enough.”
This connection between past and present adds a poetic depth to Rosalía’s music, blending inspiration across generations.
Rosalía’s emotional meeting with Patti Smith at Electric Lady Studios symbolizes the bridge between eras of artistic passion and creative freedom.
