American Legion Volunteers to Fly Flags for Veterans Day

It’s time to show your colors — the red, white, and blue of our flag, symbolizing freedom and service. These colors have represented the United States since June 14, 1777, when the Continental Congress passed the Flag Act.

The flag colors have been carried into battlefields and flown over government buildings, schools, and cemeteries. The meaning of the colors was assigned by the Continental Congress in 1782. Secretary Charles Thomson explained:

"Red represented valor and bravery, white stood for purity and innocence, and blue symbolized vigilance, perseverance, and justice."

Flag Care and Education by the American Legion

American Legion members actively maintain and respect the flag. In a recent workday at Graceland Cemetery, members Gene Williams and Steve Struchen demonstrated the proper way to handle the flag. LuAnn Jackson read the symbolism of each fold while they carefully folded damaged flags affected by wind and weather.

This flag care and educational process is regularly performed at schools by American Legion members to teach youth the respect owed to the flag and those who serve under it.

Continued Efforts for Veterans Day

The flags will be flown again this weekend, honoring Veterans Day, through the dedication of American Legion members and volunteers who wear the patriotism embodied in the flag's colors.

Author’s summary: The American Legion volunteers honor Veterans Day by flying and respectfully caring for the flag, symbolizing national values of bravery, purity, and justice.
