The nationwide government shutdown in the United States has caused widespread disruption to air travel, with over 1,200 flights cancelled on Friday. This comes just weeks before the busy Thanksgiving holiday, affecting thousands of travelers.
FlightAware, a flight-tracking website, reported the following cancellations for Friday:
On Thursday, delays exceeded 6,800, alongside 200 additional cancellations.
The Trump administration ordered flight cuts to alleviate pressure on air traffic controllers who are working without pay during the federal shutdown. These cancellations are part of a phased reduction starting at 4% of flights and expected to rise to 10% if Congress does not approve funding next week.
"94 per cent of flights still departed on time, but disruptions have already caused long lines and delays at major hubs."
