Netflix's 'Baramulla' Movie Review: Manav Kaul gives his best in a film which is just not good enough!

Netflix's 'Baramulla' Movie Review

Director: Aditya Suhas Jambhale
Cast: Manav Kaul, Bhasha Sumbli, Arista Mehta, Rohaan Singh, Masoom Mumtaz Khan, Ashwini Koul, Mir Sarvar, Vikas Shukla

Plot Overview

Baramulla revolves around the mysterious disappearance of children and supernatural events. DSP Ridwaan Sayyed (Manav Kaul) is assigned to Baramulla to investigate the case, only to find his own family affected by the unfolding mystery. The house he stays in carries a dark past, adding to the tension.

Visual and Setting

The film’s setting is a major highlight. Unlike many Bollywood films, it avoids romanticizing the region. Baramulla, a snow-covered, slow-paced city nestled in a beautiful valley, is portrayed authentically, where rumours and legends blur with reality.

Storytelling and Execution

The narrative begins with the disappearance of a boy during a magic show, making the magician the prime suspect. As more children vanish, the tension builds. However, despite handling a sensitive and compelling topic, the storytelling falls short, weakening the overall impact.

"Storytelling is an art that needs to be mastered and especially when you are handling a sensitive topic; it needs to be done with care."
"The primary thing that will instantly attract you about Netflix’s Baramulla is its look."
"A movie with a serious theme could have been made better. Shoddy storytelling massacred the film."

Summary

Manav Kaul delivers a strong performance, but the film's weak storytelling undermines its potential to effectively address a sensitive and important subject.

Author's Note

This film’s fascinating premise is let down by poorly executed storytelling, despite impressive visuals and committed acting.
