Jim Belushi recalls watching his brother embody the Blues Brothers role

Jim Belushi shared one of his most cherished memories from his early Hollywood years, reflecting on his late brother John Belushi’s iconic performance as part of The Blues Brothers.

“I loved that moment, to see my brother just hit the top of his chart.”

John Belushi rose to fame as one of the founding cast members of “Saturday Night Live” in 1975. Together with Dan Aykroyd, he created The Blues Brothers, a comedic duo that evolved into a full blues and soul act. Their first television performance took place on “SNL” in April 1978 before the project expanded into a real touring band.

By September 1978, The Blues Brothers were opening for Steve Martin at the Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles. Jim recalled that night with affection:

“I loved going to the Universal Amphitheater when they came to LA and opened for Steve Martin. And John was so magnificent.”

Tragically, John Belushi passed away on March 5, 1982, at the age of 33 from a suspected drug overdose. Years later, Jim honored his brother’s legacy by stepping into the role of Zee Blues alongside Dan Aykroyd’s Elwood, at Aykroyd’s invitation.
