Mark Zahra claimed four victories on a radiant spring day at Flemington, including a win on Observer in the feature race. The triumphs tied the record for most wins on Victoria Derby Day, witnessed by a crowd of 86,112.
Reflecting on his day, Zahra said,
“I can’t even remember what I won on first.... it was good to have two winners on the board. So full of confidence heading into Tentyris.”He described Tentyris as his best ride of the day, improving steadily until winning a major race. Zahra shared his excitement:
“You start to think, can I do it again?”Meanwhile, Observer led the race from start to finish.
When asked about his wife Elyse’s reaction, Zahra noted,
“I just tell her I’ll meet you in the yard after. But she’s pretty fired up about today.”He reminded her it was just the first day of the carnival and urged patience for the rest of the week.
About his daughter, he shared, “She asked if I had a winner or not, but she'd rather watch Gabby’s Dollhouse than the races at the moment. She does like when I bring her home a trophy, so I’ve got a few to hand over tonight.”
