Thailand received over 100 contestants on Sunday as the 74th Miss Universe pageant kicked off in Bangkok, featuring Cambodia’s participant despite tensions between the two nations.
Under the theme “The Grand Universe: The Power of Love, The Power of Thailand,” the event is held in Thailand for the fourth time. Activities will continue through November 21 in Bangkok, Phuket, and Pattaya, highlighting the country’s culture and tourism.
Cambodia’s entrant, Thai Neary Socheata, also known as Fiyata, arrived in Bangkok despite the Cambodian license holder ELEVENTO9 Company announcing Cambodia's withdrawal the day before. The company cited “unresolved situations between Cambodia and Thailand” as the reason.
“I’ve arrived safely in Thailand. Thank you for the warm welcome, kindness, and support from everyone. Your love truly means so much to me.” — Fiyata
Fiyata’s independent choice to compete stirred online debate in both countries. She received a warm reception from Cambodian fans at Suvarnabhumi Airport.
This year’s Miss Universe highlights how individual determination can bridge political tensions, while promoting cultural exchange and tourism in Thailand.
