Switzerland says conditions remain unmet for recognizing Palestine

Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter stated that Switzerland is not ready to recognize Palestine at this time, emphasizing the need for a lasting ceasefire and a stable government before such a step can be taken.

“We feel that there are some conditions that have to be fulfilled, like all the hostages must return home, and also the dead bodies. There must be a permanent ceasefire, there must be a plan for peace,”

She explained this during a press conference with the Foreign Press Association in Bern, responding to a question from Anadolu. The president added that recognition “may come one day… when the conditions are fulfilled,” but only if a stable administration and elections are in place.

“Switzerland condemns every violation of international law. So we condemned the disproportionate intervention of Israel, as well as the terrorist attack of Hamas,”

Keller-Sutter noted that whether the situation in Gaza constitutes genocide is a matter for international courts to decide.

Cantonal Authority on Gaza Aid

When asked about Zurich canton’s recent decision to deny treatment for injured children from Gaza, Keller-Sutter clarified that such matters are determined by cantons, not by the federal government.
