West Coast Mainline Faces Days of Disruption After Train Derailment

Train services along one of the United Kingdom’s key rail routes are expected to face extensive disruption for several days following a derailment in Cumbria early this morning.

The West Coast Mainline, connecting London to Edinburgh via Birmingham and Preston, will remain closed for “a number of days,” according to Avanti West Coast.

The accident occurred at around 6:10 am when a train traveling from Glasgow to London Euston struck a landslip at approximately 80 mph. The train had departed Glasgow at 4:28 am.

There were 87 passengers and staff on board. Four individuals sustained minor injuries and were treated by emergency services at the scene. No further hospital treatment was required, and all on board were taken to a nearby rest center before being discharged.

Official Response

“We will work swiftly to make sure that people can get off the train safely. I will be remaining in constant touch with the train operating company and the Railway Accident Investigation Branch.”

A spokesperson for the North West Ambulance Service confirmed the minor injuries and emphasized that a “major incident” had been declared to ensure a coordinated response across emergency services.
