Cambrian College Launches Dental Assisting Program
Cambrian College is introducing a new Dental Assisting program starting this January to meet Northern Ontario dental practices' demand for qualified staff. The program blends online courses with weekend sessions on campus, offering students a flexible 10-month schedule to earn their certificate while continuing to work.
Students also participate in a seven-week placement, gaining practical experience in a dental practice setting.
Program Importance and Role of Dental Assistants
“Dental assistants play a vital role in supporting dentists and dental hygienists, and enhancing patient care,” said Rachel Steels, dean of Cambrian’s School of Health Sciences.
Dental assistants are responsible for a variety of clinical and administrative tasks, such as:
- Infection control
- Taking x-rays
- Assisting with dental procedures
- Providing chairside support
- Educating patients
- Coordinating office activities
Community and Industry Demand
The launch of this program responds directly to strong demand from both the community and the dental industry.
