David Lammy forgets Remembrance symbol as he fills in for Starmer

David Lammy Forgets Remembrance Symbol While Filling in for Starmer

Justice Secretary David Lammy stood in for Keir Starmer during Prime Minister's Questions in the House of Commons and began the session by paying tribute to those who fought "to defend our freedom."

However, it was quickly noticed that Lammy was not wearing a poppy, the traditional symbol of Remembrance, unlike the majority of MPs. About 15 minutes into the session, fellow Cabinet member Bridget Phillipson handed him a poppy pin to wear.

Responding to Tory MP Bob Blackman, Lammy explained the oversight by saying, "I bought a new suit this morning because my Godmother said she would be watching."

"I am very grateful to Ms Phillipson for ensuring that despite wearing a new suit I have managed to put my poppy on."

Conservative Party chairman Kevin Hollinrake criticized Lammy's failure to wear a poppy during such an important occasion, calling it "a disgrace" that he represented Sir Keir at PMQs without it.

Summary

David Lammy, while standing in for Starmer at PMQs, initially forgot to wear a poppy but corrected it mid-session; this oversight sparked criticism amid Remembrance events.
