The Canton of Aargau in Switzerland has launched an online map that displays the suitability of different geothermal energy applications across the region. This initiative aims to support strategic investments and the development of geothermal projects.
The map serves as a foundational tool for promoting the targeted use of geothermal energy within the canton, especially highlighting its relevance in sustainable energy supply and decarbonization efforts.
Geothermal energy, particularly shallow heat extraction using ground source heat pumps, already contributes significantly to achieving sustainable and secure energy supply goals. It aligns with the broader target of reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Following the recognition of favorable geothermal conditions in Aargau, the Cantonal Government approved a motion in March 2022 from the Grand Council. This motion called for the creation of a geothermal register to pinpoint geothermal potential throughout the canton’s municipalities.
Afterward, the Energy Division of the Department of Construction, Transport and Environment, in cooperation with both internal and external experts, conducted a thorough investigation into the geothermal potential of the region.
