British actress Aimee Lou Wood commented after photographer Misan Harriman posted a clip from Sydney Sweeney’s new interview, where Sweeney dismissed backlash over her involvement in a controversial American Eagle advertisement accused of carrying racist undertones.
Wood, 31, addressed the issue after Harriman criticized Sweeney, 28, for disregarding the harm caused by the campaign, which featured the slogan “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.”
"Presuming that you are not a white supremacist, at least say how horrified you were by how this campaign was amplified and celebrated by unrepentant racists who believe in eugenics."
Harriman, a Nigerian-born British photographer known for working with Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, Rihanna, and Tom Cruise, condemned Sweeney’s remarks, insisting she should acknowledge the campaign’s offensive message.
"At least recognise the harm your jeans campaign has caused Black folk. The undertone of the campaign is that your genetics are superior to others — the play on words is clear as day and racists loved it. So, presuming you didn’t know when you shot it, you certainly do now, and it matters."
The American Eagle campaign, launched earlier this year, drew sharp criticism online due to perceived racial insensitivity linked to its tagline. Sweeney’s recent interview revived discussion as she appeared to minimize the concerns surrounding the advertisement’s tone and implications.
The tension between Sydney Sweeney and Aimee Lou Wood highlights how celebrity endorsements can ignite cultural debates when advertising messages appear racially insensitive.
