Carrie Bickmore named 2026 Victorian Australian of the Year

Radio host and former television presenter Carrie Bickmore has been honored as the 2026 Victorian Australian of the Year for her outstanding efforts in advancing brain cancer research. Her dedication stems from personal tragedy, following the death of her husband, Greg Lange, from brain cancer in 2010.

Philanthropic Impact

Since 2015, Bickmore has raised over $27 million to support brain cancer research through her charity, Carrie’s Beanies 4 Brain Cancer Foundation. The organization transformed how the disease is funded and researched in Australia, significantly increasing awareness and support nationwide.

Establishing The Brain Cancer Centre

In 2021, Bickmore expanded her mission by founding The Brain Cancer Centre, aimed at linking scientists and medical professionals through research collaborations and clinical trials. The centre has since attracted an additional $45 million to boost research and improve survival outcomes for patients.

Acknowledgment and Humility

“I feel like there are so many people, not only in the brain cancer space but in the world, that are doing incredible things. It made me deeply uncomfortable,” she said during the ceremony in Melbourne.

Despite her initial hesitation, Bickmore accepted the award with gratitude, acknowledging the broader community of researchers and advocates working tirelessly to combat the disease.
