Customers are urged to return specific jars of tomato sauce immediately due to the risk of fatal food poisoning caused by Clostridium botulinum.
First and Last Bakery, LLC, based in Connecticut, announced a recall of three tomato-based pasta sauces. These products were distributed between Connecticut and Massachusetts, primarily through Big Y and possibly other retailers, beginning September 22, 2025.
All recalled sauces are sold in 26-ounce jars and have a use-by date of September 26.
Botulism results from toxins produced by Clostridium botulinum, bacteria that attack the nervous system and cause paralysis. Although no illnesses have been reported, the risk is severe enough to prompt the recall.
The US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) stated the sauces "were manufactured without an adequately evaluated production process to prevent the formation of the dangerous bacterium," according to the Independent.
The bacteria tend to develop if acidified or low-acid canned foods are not processed correctly to kill or inhibit toxin formation.
Consumers should stop using the products immediately and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
