Gators in NBA: Will Richard Drops 30 in First Start
Rookie guard Will Richard made a strong debut for the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday night. In his first NBA start, the former University of Florida standout tallied 30 points on 10-of-15 shooting, including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. He also added seven rebounds and three assists in 35 minutes during a narrow 121-116 road loss to the Sacramento Kings.
After sitting out the previous two games, Richard earned his opportunity due to injuries sidelining Warriors stars Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green. Seizing the moment, he proved himself as a capable contributor for the team.
“He’s shown he’s an NBA player,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. “The experience, the poise – he doesn’t turn it over, he makes the right play. This guy’s a hell of a player.”
At the press conference, Richard was asked whether scoring 30 points in his first start meant anything special to him, to which he responded with humility, focusing on team performance over personal stats.
Leading Sacramento was veteran Russell Westbrook, who notched his 204th career triple-double—the most in NBA history—finishing with 23 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists. The Warriors, now 5-4, will head to Denver next to face the Nuggets at 10 p.m.
