In northern KwaZulu-Natal, villagers have to fix their own roads and drains

Communities Take Matters into Their Own Hands

In northern KwaZulu-Natal, villagers have taken the initiative to fix their own roads and drains, as they cannot wait for the government to prepare for the next rainy season.

Locals, such as Sbhamu Ngobese, lead efforts to clear rocks from the D2251 road in Mbewunye, east of Nquthu, which has become impassable due to heavy rains and flooding.

Elderly men in East Nquthu use concrete blocks to dodge the water that has flooded a bridge.

Residents have resorted to using their own money and time to fix and prevent further damage, including digging trenches and putting in storm drains, due to the lack of action from authorities.
