As the government shutdown continues, thousands of families who rely on federal food assistance are facing uncertainty. Funding for the SNAP program is set to run out, leaving many children without access to nutritious meals.
In Missouri, over 600,000 people participate in SNAP, with 264,000 being children. In Kansas, there are approximately 182,000 SNAP participants, with nearly 77,000 being children.
"I fed my son, he ate, every night. But me, on the other hand, didn’t," said Teresa Grado, co-owner of Lilly’s Cantina. "So, I get it."
In response to the crisis, Grado's restaurant is offering free meals to children starting Saturday. "It won’t always be a flauta with rice; it may be chili, hot dogs," Grado said. "I just want to be able to feed those who are in need."
