South Coast Food Share Prepares for Increase in Families in Need

As the government shutdown approaches the one month mark, SNAP and WIC benefits are expected to be cut off, and communities are preparing for an influx of families in need.

South Coast Food Share, a network that distributes food to various food banks in Coos and Curry Counties, has seen an increase in demand, with 50 new families showing up for food assistance last week, 15 more than usual.

The biggest need is food, that's the biggest need that we're going to see, in order to feed the influx of people and provide support from them.

The food network is overseen by Oregon Coast Community Action, a nonprofit that addresses housing, education, and food needs, and is preparing for a 25-30% increase in families in need.
