Two New Emmy Noether Groups Established at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics

Their research focuses on algorithms and machine learning.

The Emmy Noether Program offers outstanding early-career scientists the opportunity to qualify for a university professorship by independently leading a research group for a period of six years.

Together, the two researchers will receive around 3.7 million euros in funding.

Research Group: Spatial Modeling and Reasoning

Jan Eric Lenssen will receive approximately 1.9 million euros in funding to establish the research group Spatial Modeling and Reasoning.

The goal is to extract as much relevant information as possible about the environment from only a few visual "impressions", or data points.

The group aims to enable computers—especially AI systems based on machine learning—to interpret visual scenes in a way that resembles human understanding.
