The city of Gloversville's computer system was compromised by a ransomware attack, affecting the personal information of current and former employees.
The attack was discovered in March by the finance commissioner and reported to the FBI, State Police, and the Department of Homeland Security's Incident Response Team.
According to the city, the attackers, believed to be from Eastern Europe, stole employee personal information, including payroll records and account numbers.
A ransomware note was found on the server, demanding $300,000. The city hired consultants to negotiate and ultimately approved paying $150,000 for the return of the stolen data.
