Defenders of the Amazon Targeted in Ecuador
The Ecuadorian government is taking steps to criminalize dozens of individuals who fight to defend the Amazon forest from deforestation, according to Global Witness.
Land and environmental defenders in Latin America and the Caribbean, including indigenous peoples, are being targeted. With less than a month to go before COP30 is held in the heart of the Amazon in Brazil, this move has raised concerns.
The Prosecutor's Office, led by President Daniel Noboa, has launched investigations into over 60 individuals for the offense of "unjust private enrichment" and has frozen many of their and their organizations' bank accounts.
The body of indigenous campaigner Efraín Fueres was carried through Quiroga, Ecuador, highlighting the risks faced by those defending the Amazon.
The "lungs of the earth" are under threat from deforestation.
