President Cyril Ramaphosa has lauded Ambassador Nathi Mthethwa as a dedicated public servant of South Africa, describing him as a thinker and teacher within the liberation movement.
Delivering the eulogy at Mthethwa's funeral at KwaMbonambi in Kwa-Zulu Natal, Ramaphosa recalled Mthethwa's life of dedication to activism and loyalty to African National Congress (ANC) principles, even in difficult times.
He was of a generation that came of age as our democracy was about to dawn. It was a generation of young lions that saw the end of apartheid and ushered in a new era of freedom and justice.
Ramaphosa called on ANC members to reflect on Mthethwa's life, who was deeply pained by the party's divisions, and to learn from his courage and commitment to the struggle.
Mthethwa taught valuable lessons about courage and never lost sight of what drew him into the struggle, says Ramaphosa.
