Despite uncertainty, the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program remains a vital source of funding for Nebraska startups.
Carrick Detweiler, a professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, experienced the transformative power of SBIR funding firsthand. While working on drones and robotics, Detweiler recalled the moment when would-be clients expressed interest in his water-sampling drone:
“Hey, when can we buy that?”
Detweiler's response was:
“We’re like, ‘Well, we kind of need a team of graduate students right now to get it to work’”
This encounter sparked Detweiler's interest in entrepreneurship, leading to the creation of Drone Amplified, a startup that utilizes drones for various applications, including controlled burns, avalanche management, and whale tagging.
Speakers at a Silicon Prairie Startup Week panel encouraged Nebraska startups to apply for SBIR funding, despite the current uncertainty surrounding the program.
