Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Sari Essayah (CD) plans to allow wolf hunting starting from 1 January, with a target of at least 65 wolves this winter.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry aims for a wolf population of 273 to ensure a favourable conservation status, which is lower than the current population of about 430.
The Finnish wolf population is at a favourable conservation level through most of the country, up to Fell Lapland.
A report by the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) shows a significant increase in the number of wolves, especially in the west and southwest.
