Gun Store Owner Sentenced for Involuntary Manslaughter

A Berkeley County gun shop owner has been sentenced to 25 days in jail for the 2021 involuntary manslaughter of his employee.

Jon Whitley, owner of Coastal Firearms, pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to probation with a unique condition: he will serve 5 days in jail every year for 5 years, starting from November 5.

As part of his sentence, Whitley will also complete community service with an organization that supports military families who have lost a spouse.

The sentence comes over 4 years after the deadly shooting that took the life of Steven Mrgan, Whitley's employee.

No comment from the judge or the defendant was provided.

The prosecution recommended probation, which was accepted by the judge.
