World Food Day: Eradicating Hunger Through Cooperation
According to Director-General Qu Dongyu, "Through continued international cooperation, we can eradicate world hunger once and for all."
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), which has been working towards a world where no one goes hungry since its inception.
Today, around 8.2 percent of people face chronic undernourishment, a significant improvement from 1946 when roughly two-thirds of the global population lived in areas with inadequate food supply.
- In 1946, the first World Food Survey conducted by FAO revealed inadequate food supply in two-thirds of the world.
- In 2025, despite a population over three times larger, the world produces enough calories to feed everyone.
The choice is between going forward and going backward.
