Indonesia Detects Radiation Traces at Clove Farm

Indonesian authorities have found traces of radioactivity at a clove farm on Sumatra island, according to a government spokesperson.

This discovery comes as Jakarta expands its investigation into the detection of Cesium-137 contamination in spices from Indonesia by the US health authority.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) detected Cesium-137 in a sample of cloves from PT Natural Java Spice and also in a sample of frozen shrimp from Indonesia in August.

A task force spokesperson, Bara Hasibuan, stated that inspection teams were sent to a processing facility and farms on Java and Sumatra islands. Traces of radioactivity were only found at the clove farm in Lampung, Sumatra.

The government has banned the farm from selling its cloves as a precautionary measure, although further details were not disclosed.
