Methane Targets for 2050 Lowered Following Independent Review
The Government has announced new methane targets for 2050, providing farmers and exporters with a clear emissions goal.
The target range will be 14-24%, rather than the 24-47% range set in 2017, following an independent review.
- A review of the target will be conducted in 2040 to ensure alignment with science and key trading partners.
- No tax will be imposed on agricultural methane emissions.
- A potential split gas target will be considered for all future climate change commitments.
- Better alignment with the Paris Agreement will be pursued.
- Investments will be made in developing and rolling out up to 11 methane-cutting tools by 2030.
